The Energy Avenger™ is a proven power reduction technology, patented and distributed by
ISI Energy Controls, The Energy Avenger™ is an Energy Conservation Unit, a controlled transformer manufactured and UL labeled by Siemens. This electro / mechanical Energy Conservation Unit (ESU) reduces energy consumed by High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting, commonly used in school parking lots, gymnasiums, municipal street lights, warehouses, correctional facilities, military enclaves, seaports, cargo facilities, car dealerships, parking garages and highway interchanges.
The Energy Avenger™ works by leveraging light spectrum shifts specific to HID lighting, achieving an imperceptible change in light intensity while saving 20% to 35% in energy usage!
A controlled transformer manufactured for and UL Listed through Siemens. It will reduce your energy consumption by 20% to 35% while maintaining IES lighting guidelines and substantially reducing your monthly electrical bill.

Works with all new and existing HID fixtures, lamps and magnetic ballast (metal halide, high pressure sodium and mercury vapor lamps) and requires no re-fixturing or re-lamping. The Energy Avenger™ is installed after the circuit breaker panel and before the HID lighting fixtures.
How It Works
The Energy Avenger™ seamlessly interacts with current HID lighting systems. No special bulbs or equipment is required. It decreases wattage feeding the lamp and creates a Kelvin shift of light output. The color spectrum shifts from red-orange toward blue-green (4050 to 4850) and results in visually better, whiter light. This type of light is perceived as brighter by the human eye, and therefore reduces or eliminates the perceived light loss while achieving substantial energy savings.
The Energy Avenger™ Lighting Control System is designed to control High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting units, and yield a power savings by altering the applied voltage to the lights once the HID units have been started and warmed up.
The Energy Avenger is designed to operate on all HID lights using magnetic ballast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need special light fixtures?
No - The
Energy Avenger™ treats your existing light fixtures.
What type of lighting can be treated?
Metal halide, high pressure sodium, mercury vapor and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting on magnetic ballast all respond very well to the
Energy Avenger™ reduction process.
Do any changes have to be made to my light fixtures?
No - your lighting stays as it is. Nothing is added to or taken away from the light fixtures.
Does the Energy Avenger™ reduce the life of the ballast and lights?

No - there is no measurable change in lamp life. Ballast life is not shortened. In fact, reducing the voltage to ballast reduces the amount of heat created in the coil; theory would suggest, then, that cooler running ballasts may even last longer and the lights will need to be replaced less often.
How does The Energy Avenger™ reduce the voltage required for lighting?
The system reduces voltage through use of resistors and a control transformer with “hard taps” to set the savings levels based on the IES standards.
Will the light fixture warranty be affected?
No - light fixture warranty is not affected in any way. All major ballast manufacturers have approved the varying of voltage to ballasts. Lamp manufacturers warrant their lamps to operate with 50% reduction in voltage as long as a prescribed warm-up period is adhered to.
Where is the Energy Avenger™ installed?
Typically, the
Energy Avenger™ is installed next to the lighting panel.
Are my fixtures’ UL/CSA certifications affected?
No - The
Energy Avenger™ system does not change any of the wiring or components of a light fixture. Some “retrofit” systems alter the lighting fixture components, and thus may affect UL/CSA certification.
How does the Energy Avenger™ impact lumen output?
The unit reduces lumens yet increases illumination. When the
Energy Avenger™ goes through the steps down process, it causes the color rendering index of the bulbs to go through a Kelvin shift. This shift causes the bulbs to burn in the blue green spectrum which is a whiter light that allows the eyes to see better.
How is this different from hi/low lighting?
The
Energy Avenger™ system works very differently from hi/low lighting. It controls the voltage to all fixtures from the main lighting panel; no circuitry is installed in the ceiling or at the fixtures. In the unlikely event of a problem, our unit will default to full power.
Why do I need more than the two levels a hi/low system would provide?
Many facilities find that the low level is too low for most activities, and that the high level doesn’t offer any savings. The
Energy Avenger™ system allows for “hard taps” to be set at savings levels from 20% to 40% depending on the application. This greater flexibility creates a system that will actually be used - not just left at the high level. The result is substantially greater electrical savings.
Where have these systems been installed?
The
Energy Avenger™ is installed from coast to coast in North America, tailoring solutions for a broad range of facilities including prisons, casinos, parking garages, car dealerships, post offices and public works facilities.
How much savings can the system produce?
The amount of savings depends on usage patterns. Typically, an area with a mix of occupied and unoccupied scheduling can save from 20 to 40%. The strategies outlined above can have a great effect on the total savings number.
Is the system electrically certified?
Yes - certification is available for all areas of North America.
What’s the difference between Power Conditioners and the Energy Avenger™?
A Power Conditioner is a device that specifically works to smooth the voltage of the electricity it supplies. This is done in a variety of ways such as filters, power factors, wave chopping, wave rebuilding or shaping. The idea is to take existing wave forms and modify them to look like the 60 cycle sine wave.
The
Energy Avenger™ simply rides the existing wave and does not modify it in any way electronically. Through a series of switches, relays, and resistors the
Energy Avenger™ simply lowers the voltage after the lights have reached its peak. Utilities use a similar system for variable high line transformer switching.
